Identifying Persuasive Rhetoric
For this assignment, I analyzed a piece a of media for Aristotles three modes of persuasion (ethos, logos, pathos) and identified as many examples of each mode as I could observe. I then wrote about how each persuasive technique impacted me as a viewer. Through this assignment, I was able to identify how the modes of persuasion are utilized in real-world applications and, in turn, how I can utilize them in my writing.
Memo Practice
As a test of the class' memo writing skills and our knowledge of the format, our instructor gave us a "scenario" quiz, in which we were tasked with imparting harsh-but-very-real news of a mass layoff to our subordinates. In this assignment, I had to focus not only on formatting the document in the correct manner, but also on how to deliver the layoff news in a way that was appropriate for the occasion and audience. I had to nail down the very fragile balance between professional and exacting, and sympathetic and understanding.
Identifying Rhetorical Situation
The goal of this assignment was to find an advertisement and analyze its rhetorical situation -- AKA, the purpose of the ad, the context surrounding it, and the audiences it may interact with. However, this was no surface-level analysis. This assignment allowed me dig deeply into the ad's rhetorical situation. I identified the ad's primary and secondary audiences, how it may have multiple purposes/goals, and the different cultural/ethical elements within it's context.
Corporate Mission Statement
After learning in-class about what mission statements are, how they are made, and what makes one effective, I was tasked with creating one! I selected a campus organization that I am apart of and made a concise, one-paragraph mission statement. Afterwards, I briefly explained why I wrote what I wrote; namely, how I fit feelings of both credibility and inclusivity into one paragraph, while also explaining what the organization is/does. For me, this assignment was an intense exercise in professional and concise writing.
Career Profile
During an Introduction to Professional Writing course I took in my sophomore year of college, I was tasked with creating an infographic that described the job/career field I wanted to pursue post-grad. This assignment was multifaceted. I had to extensively research this career, but condense all of the information into a digital poster. Then, I had to create a poster, but make it in a way that was palatable, yet eye-catching, and fit all of my information. This assignment taught me a lot about the publishing industry and design principles.
